WJ's environmental credentials help secure Nottinghamshire deal

27/06/2024 | CHRIS AMES

Road marking and maintenance firm WJ Group has won a new contract with Via East Midlands to deliver road marking services across Nottinghamshire.

The deal, announced with an undisclosed value, will see WJ deliver both the reactive maintenance work and planned improvement schemes across Nottinghamshire County Council’s road network.

WJ said a key reason for its successful tender was its ongoing environmental strategy, adding that it is on an active path to be net-zero operationally by 2032. As part of this, the company has 'reformulated its thermoplastic products to reduce embedded carbon, confirmed through its verified carbon footprint calculator'.

Loren Jackson, General Manager at WJ, said: ‘This partnership is further evidence that our creative thinking – coupled with our environmental commitments – sets us apart as leaders in road marking and as highways safety experts.’

Via East Midlands is owned by Nottinghamshire CC and organises highways service for the region. It helps maintain more than 4,400km of roads, 4,300km of footways and 3,200km of rights of way on behalf of the council.

Supply chain manager Clare Taylor said: ‘Ensuring the strategic road network across Nottinghamshire is well maintained is crucial for the safety of road users.

‘Working with WJ will not only enable us to deliver high quality improvement schemes, but it will also be delivered in a sustainable and carbon-efficient manner.’

Earlier this year, WJ added Weatherline Ultra to its Weatherline product portfolio, which it said achieves over 500 mcd/m²/lx (> R5) and 75 mcd/m²/lx (RW3) retro- reflectivity and has been designed to ensure visibility in any weather.

This is made possible thanks to the product’s dotted profile, which raises the marking above surface water for enhanced wet night visibility.
