Speed compliance hits 99% on Scottish ANPR-enforced road

Figures released by Transport Scotland show that almost every single driver on a 51-mile stretch (80 km) of the A90 travelled within the speed limit in 2018.

The road is enforced by Jenoptik average speed cameras which monitor the journey time between locations and flag up those completing sections of journeys in time that they could only have done if they were speeding.

The figures show that in the 12 months of operation, 5,942 drivers were caught breaking the limit and were issued with a fine and penalty points, however this was out of an estimated 8.4 million journeys in each direction meaning Conditional Offers Fixed Penalty Notices made up just 0.07% of journeys.

Jenoptk Director Geoff Collins told SMART Highways, “Despite what some sections of the media will have you believe, speed enforcement is not about raising revenue by fining people but about changing driver behaviour.  These figures clearly demonstrate how the enforcement solution implemented in Scotland has done that – it has reduced the number of people killed or seriously injured and the low violation record is the icing on the cake.”
