Next phase of A34 project due to start

Amey starts work this month on the next stage of the £60 million the Stafford Western Access Route project.

The latest stage of the Staffordshire County Council scheme comprises upgrading the junctions of the A34 at Foregate Street with Greyfriars Place and Browning Street north of Stafford town centre to improve traffic flow.

Mark Winnington, Staffordshire County Council’s economic growth leader (pictured left with local enterprise partnership chairman Mark Frost) said: “Upgrading the junctions on Foregate Street will help to create the gateway to the new road from the north. While people may not see significant changes, the work will include essential signal upgrades to prepare for the increased number of vehicles.

“Work is scheduled to be completed by the summer and the road will remain open at all times. We’d ask people to allow some additional travel time as there will be lane closures. Completion of this stage of the project will be another significant milestone towards the future growth of the county town.”

The new route will link Foregate Street and the north of the town centre with the Newport Road on the western side of Stafford and also involve upgrading signals.

A new left turn lane will be created on Browning Street on the approach to the A34. Work will start in the week beginning February 20.
