More than 50 businesses in the intelligent transport sector have written to the prime minister to call for the Government to move forward with a Future of Transport Bill in the forthcoming King’s Speech.
The open letter was organised by Intelligent Transport Systems UK (ITS UK), which describes itself as the voice of the transport technology industry.
ITS UK said the letter stressed the need for a bill to support transport innovation.Core asks from industry include regulations for self and remote-driving vehicles, progress with smart ticketing options, certainty on the future of micro-mobility and support for Mobility as a Service (MaaS).
It stated bluntly: ‘A Bill was set out in the Queen’s Speech in May 2022, but no legislation has yet come forward.’
ITS UK chief executive Max Sugarman (pictured) said: ‘The UK is home to some of the most innovative transport technology companies in the world. With a bill promised in the 2022 Queen’s Speech, it is now more urgent than ever that we see legislation introduced.’
Signatories to the letter range from international companies such as Arcadis and Atkins to technology firms such as Clearview Intelligence, Gaist, Jenoptik, and Yunex Traffic, and the Institute of Highway Engineers and the universities of Newcastle and Leeds.
